What happens when we gather around the same table?Unity Day began with a simple idea: bring people from the Native and non-Native communities around Leech Lake together, share some food, and give neighbors an opportunity to know one another a little better. This year's gathering falls on Indigenous People's Day, making it an especially fitting time to learn, visit and celebrate together. During the evening, our Ojibwe hosts will share some of the customs associated with a community meal, including smudging, preparation of the spirit plate, honoring elders and other traditions. Then we'll do what neighbors have always done - eat, visit and enjoy one another's company. You don't need an invitation. You don't need to belong to an organization. And you don't need to know anything about Ojibwe culture before you arrive. Bring a favorite dish if you'd like. Bring a friend if you'd like. Most importantly, come curious - and come welcome.
